What is classic acupuncture?

Classic acupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe that the human body has thousands of acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi, pronounced "chee") through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause sickness. By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, thereby improving health.

What does classic acupucture consist of?

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner's hands or with electrical stimulation.

What does classic acupucture feel like?

During acupuncture treatments hair-thin needles are used. Most people report feeling very minimal pain as the needle is inserted. The needle is inserted to a point that produces a sensation of pressure or ache. Needles may be heated during the treatment or mild electric current may be applied to them. Some people report acupuncture makes them feel energized. Others say they feel relaxed.

how does classic acupuncture affect the body?

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment alone or in combination with conventional therapies to treat the following:

  • Nausea caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy

  • Dental pain after surgery

  • Addiction

  • Headaches

  • Menstrual cramps

  • Tennis elbow

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Myofascial pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Low back pain

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Asthma

what conditions may benefit from classic acupuncture?

Many patients seek acupuncture treatment for relief of chronic pain, such as arthritis or low back pain. Other conditions treated include digestive concerns, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, insomnia, menstrual pain and infertility, migraines, addiction and much more.

how do i prepare for my acupuncture appointment?

You will be asked to remove certain items of clothing, depending on what we are treating. If you feel more comfortable changing to shorts and tank, please bring these items along to your treatment. Proper draping techniques will be used, so bringing a change of clothing is optional.

Hydration is very important when it comes to the effectiveness of any treatment, so please make sure to drink lots of water on the day of your treatment. You will be on the treatment table anywhere from 15-90 minutes, so please be mindful of the amount of water you drink right before the session.

It is important to eat a light meal or snack no longer than an hour and a half before your session. This ensures you remain comfortable during your session, and lessens the possibility of feeling dizzy or lightheaded after your treatment. Eating a large meal is not recommended, as you will be laying down for treatment, sometimes on your belly.

Acupuncture and cupping therapy can leave you feeling tired, tender over needling sites, or over treatment areas. Please be mindful of making plans after your sessions. Acupuncture can also lead to bruising over needling sites, please keep this in mind when booking.

Facial Acupuncture patients, please follow all acupuncture guidelines above. Do not book facial acupuncture if you have an important event within 48 hours, if you are worried about potential bruising on the face.
